Aerial Assault

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1990 exclusively for the Game Gear, Aerial Assault is a military-themed vertical scrolling shoot-'em-up that challenged the hardware limits of Sega's portable console. Tasked with stopping a rogue global terrorist syndicate threatening world peace, players pilot an advanced fighter jet across hostile territories ranging from sprawling tropical archipelagos to heavily fortified naval fleets. Unlike many simplified handheld conversions of the era, this title was built from the ground up for portable play, delivering a surprisingly intense arcade atmosphere despite the Game Gear's infamous motion-blur-prone LCD screen.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Spanning multiple fast-paced stages, Aerial Assault combines traditional shoot-'em-up mechanics with strategic power-up management. As players navigate relentless waves of enemy fighter jets, anti-aircraft turrets, and massive boss armadas, they can collect specialized icon crates dropped by enemy formations. These items upgrade the jet's primary forward cannons into devastating wide-spread lasers, add defensive satellite options, and supply smart-bombs capable of instantly clearing the screen of all standard projectiles and foes. The difficulty ramps up progressively, demanding precise dodging through intricate bullet hell patterns and rapid-fire engagement.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move the fighter jet in 8 directions
  • Action Keys: Fire weapons (Button 1) and deploy smart-bomb (Button 2)
  • Enter: Start / Pause
