Description

The extra-terrestrials in this game are anything but friendly. They’re slimy monsters that are holding space colonists captive aboard seven alien starships. This super action game challenges you to free the helpless hostages. Search each ship’s deadly levels, using flamethrowers and laser cannons to vaporize alien scum. Look for maps to help you find your way. After you’ve saved all the captives from one ship, you must destroy its powerful leader before you can move on to the next ship. Remember, to the aliens, you’re slime. And they want you good… and dead!

Alien Syndrome

Overview & History

Originally a 1987 arcade hit by Sega, Alien Syndrome was successfully ported to the Sega Game Gear in 1992 by SIMS. This portable adaptation retains the eerie, sci-fi horror atmosphere of the original while shrinking the top-down maze-shooting action onto the handheld's 8-bit screen. Players step into the spacesuits of space-hardened heroes Ricky and Mary, who must infiltrate biological research vessels overrun by biomechanical horrors. Unlike the arcade version's cooperative play, the Game Gear iteration is a solo survival mission, tasking you with rescuing trapped human hostages before time runs out and you face the terrifying, multi-stage alien queen guarding the exit.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay revolves around systematic exploration and high-intensity shooting. Each deck is laid out as a labyrinth filled with crawling monstrosities, face-hugger lookalikes, and mutated bio-organisms. To unlock the exit elevator on each stage, players must rescue a specific quota of blinking hostages trapped inside holding cells. Weapon management is crucial; you start with a basic blaster, but can pick up devastating power-ups like flamethrowers, rocket launchers, and lasers that alter your combat efficiency. A real-time map pops up via the pause screen to help navigate the suffocating corridors. Boss battles at the end of every stage require quick reflexes and bullet-hell evasion tactics in cramped, hostile arenas.
