Description

A game endorsed by the American player who stunned the tennis world in the early 90s with his “Image is everything” looks, sporting long hair, earrings and colorful shirts, Andre Agassi Tennis includes eight players (male and female and as expected, only Agassi is a real player) rated according to movement speed and both accuracy and strength on serve, backhand and forehand.

Gameplay features all the usual moves: smashes, passing shots, volleys and all kinds of backhand and forehand plays, but unlike other games, precise positioning and timing are crucial to avoid hitting the ball outside the court, swinging the racket into thin air or more embarrassing, let the ball hit you on the head. Three courts are available: Grass, Clay and Indoor (Sega versions add a fourth, Hard), but the differences between them are minimal.

Overview & History

Released by TecMagik in 1994 for the Sega Game Gear, Andre Agassi Tennis brought the flamboyant style and gritty baseline play of the legendary tennis superstar to Sega's 8-bit handheld. Capitalizing on Agassi's 90s peak, the game dropped players onto a squeezed, vibrant LCD screen that brilliantly simulated full-court action. Unlike standard home console ports, this portable adaptation had to overcome heavy hardware limitations, utilizing clever sprite scaling and a uniquely compressed perspective to give players a true sense of depth during fast-paced rallies. While it didn't feature a deep narrative campaign, the game captured Agassi’s rebellious aura, putting his signature neon outfits and powerful two-handed backhand front and center as you carved your way through a grueling tournament ladder.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay relies heavily on positioning and timing rather than button-mashing. The Game Gear's dual-button layout forces a minimalist yet surprisingly tactical approach to shot execution. Players can unleash topspins, slicing shots, lobs, and blistering cross-court smashes by combining directional inputs with the swing button. Because the Game Gear screen is narrow, mastering the radar minimap at the bottom of the screen is essential for predicting opponent volleys and defending the baseline. Matches are played across various court surfaces—grass, clay, and hard court—each altering ball bounce speed and player traction. Endurance and stamina management add a layer of realism, forcing players to carefully pace their movements to avoid unforced errors during long, grueling rallies.

Keyboard Controls
