Description

Based on the film series, the player is part of the Perfect Security Service assigned to protect his client’s houses from burglaries. Before each level, the player can purchase tools with what limited money there in the bank account. In the level, the player can use both the available tools and the household traps to intimidate and harm any thieves that get inside. The player is awarded cash for every theft thwarted and penalized for every valuable stolen. The levels become progressively harder with additional and smarter thieves in the gang and more valuables to guard.

Released exclusively in Japan in 1994 for the Sega Game Gear by Sanritsu Denki, Torarete Tamaruka!? (roughly translated as "Like I'd Let You Steal It!?") is an eccentric and largely forgotten 8-bit action-puzzle platformer. Capitalizing on the portable console's hardware limits while attempting the whimsical, fast-paced aesthetic of mid-90s Japanese character-driven games, it puts players in the shoes of a peculiar protagonist tasked with navigating treacherous, tightly enclosed stages. Despite never receiving an official Western localization or modern port, the game maintains a cult following among retro collectors for its vibrant color palette, distinct sprites, and frustratingly demanding trial-and-error level design that pushes the Game Gear's screen to its absolute limits.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The storyline revolves around recovering stolen treasures from a band of pesky, gremlin-like thieves across a series of vertically and horizontally scrolling single-screen mazes. Gameplay deviates from standard platformers by emphasizing item management, hazard avoidance, and reactionary puzzle-solving over pure combat. Players must guide the hero through hazard-filled environments littered with patrolling enemies, shifting platforms, and dead-ends. Character moves are tightly restricted to a basic jump, a directional toss or swipe attack used to clear obstacles and stun enemies, and a unique momentum-based sliding mechanic essential for squeezing through low-ceiling gaps. Success requires memorizing enemy patrol patterns, strategically utilizing temporary power-ups scattered throughout the levels, and managing a strict countdown timer that punishes hesitation. The level design cleverly escalates in difficulty, introducing disappearing blocks, reversing gravity zones, and labyrinthine pathways that demand precise timing and spatial awareness to conquer each stage without losing all precious lives.
