Overview & History

Developed by Hookstone and published by Viacom New Media in 1995, Zoop arrived on the Sega Game Gear as a frantic, hypnotic puzzle title. Originally conceptualized as a PC screensaver, this handheld port successfully translated the abstract color-matching madness onto Sega's portable 8-bit screen. While the Game Gear version lacks the multiplayer modes of its 16-bit and console counterparts, it delivers a deeply focused, single-player score-chase experience. Players control a tiny triangular bug situated at the center of a grid, tasked with surviving an encroaching onslaught of colored shapes marching toward the core. The game's minimalist aesthetic, accompanied by an oddly addictive techno-jazz soundtrack, makes it a distinct and cult-classic entry in the Game Gear puzzle library.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Zoop operates on a deceptively simple yet panic-inducing mechanic: shapes of varying colors (red, green, blue, and yellow) slide inward from all four edges of the screen toward your central triangle. Your sole weapon is your own color-coded projectile. Firing your color into a matching shape destroys it, but firing into a non-matching shape forces you to absorb it, swapping your current projectile color with the one you just hit. If any encroaching shape breaches the center grid and touches your triangle, it is game over. To survive, players must manage combos, trigger screen-clearing special items, and clear entire rows before the geometric grid collapses inward, ratcheting up the tension with every passing second.
