Description

A young adventurer arrives at a port town in pursuit of saving the lands from evil forces of Millennium. The player goes around towns, outdoor lands and dungeons throughout the adventure. Up to three members can join the adventurer’s party at a time. In the typical Final Fantasy RPG style, towns have shops to purchase items and services as well as people to gather information, while the outdoor lands and dungeons have random appearing monsters which the player fights in turn-based combat. Later in the game, the player will be able to traverse across water with a ship.

Eternal Legend

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1991 exclusively for the Game Gear in Japan, Eternal Legend: Eien no Densetsu is an ambitious traditional JRPG that pushed the handheld's hardware limits. The storyline plunges players into a fantasy realm plagued by ancient darkness, following a young protagonist who must gather legendary elemental artifacts and forge alliances to defeat a resurrected evil deity. Unlike the typical linear handheld titles of its era, Sega crafted a deeply atmospheric epic featuring sprawling overworlds, intricate dungeon crawling, and dramatic character-driven subplots that rivaled contemporary 8-bit home console role-playing games.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay alternates between top-down exploration of towns and hazardous wilderness, and intense, first-person turn-based combat encounters. Players manage a party of distinct heroes, each utilizing specialized offensive spells, defensive wards, and physical strikes. Character progression relies heavily on traditional leveling, acquiring gold, and outfitting your party with upgraded armor and weapons found in remote merchant shops or hidden chests. Random encounters demand tactical resource management of magic points and health restorative items, ensuring that every dungeon push is a calculated risk. The vibrant, albeit compressed, sprite work and memorable chiptune soundtrack heighten the immersive, heroic quest.
