Lemmings

Overview & History

Ported to the Sega Game Gear in 1994 by Sunsoft, *Lemmings* brings DMA Design’s legendary puzzle classic into the palm of your hand. Originally conceived as an Amiga phenomenon, this handheld iteration tasks players with guiding a relentless, green-haired, blue-robed horde of suicidal rodents across increasingly hostile pixelated landscapes. Armed only with a cursor and a limited supply of specialized skills, you must save at least a percentage of the mindless marchers from falling into spiked pits, drowning in acid, or wandering into laser traps. While constrained by the Game Gear's smaller screen resolution—which necessitated a scrolling viewport and a redesigned side-mounted command bar—this version manages to capture the diabolical charm, frantic pacing, and sheer strategic depth of the 16-bit originals, offering dozens of deviously crafted single-screen stages set to an impressively chiptuned soundtrack.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At its core, *Lemmings* is a puzzle-platformer where the characters move entirely on their own, walking forward until they hit a wall, turn around, and keep going. Since you cannot directly control the movement of individual lemmings, your primary tool is the assignment of specific jobs. The Game Gear version retains the iconic roster of skills: you can designate a 'Climber' to scale vertical walls, a 'Floater' to deploy a parachute before a fatal drop, a 'Blocker' to stand firm and force others to turn around, a 'Bomber' to detonate a self-destruct blast and carve through terrain, and 'Diggers', 'Bashers', and 'Miners' to tunnel vertically, horizontally, or diagonally through dirt, rock, and steel. Success requires meticulous timing, resource management, and sometimes sacrificing a few unfortunate pioneers for the greater good of the colony.
