Description

In this third installment of the Choplifter series, it is once again your job to fly your helicopter through enemy territory to rescue hostages. The helicopter does not only take damage from enemy fire, but also from contact with buildings, trees, walls etc., which makes some levels difficult to navigate.

Enemies can be destroyed by either using the helicopter’s standard weapon, or more powerful weapons that can be picked up throughout the levels. The main task of each level however, is picking up a certain number of hostages and taking them to your home base.

Developed by Teeny Weeny Games and published by Extreme Entertainment Group in 1994, Choplifter III: Rescue & Survive brought the classic arcade chopper-rescue formula to the Sega Game Gear. Building on the legacy of Jordan Mechner's original hit, this 8-bit portable iteration dropped players into tense, hostile theaters of war across multiple continents. Unlike its Super Nintendo and Genesis siblings, the Game Gear version carved out its own identity by adapting the demanding multi-directional shooter mechanics to a constrained color palette and smaller screen resolution, creating a uniquely frantic, claustrophobic survival experience that pushed Sega's handheld hardware to its limits.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players pilot an advanced attack helicopter across four distinct hostile environments, ranging from dense jungles to heavily guarded desert bases and chemical plants. The core objective remains rescue-driven: players must carefully land their chopper to extract stranded hostages while managing a strictly limited passenger capacity. Complicating matters are relentless waves of enemy tanks, anti-aircraft turrets, rival helicopters, and incoming missile fire that threaten to destroy both the rescue craft and the civilians on the ground. Survival hinges on mastering the delicate physics of rotorcraft momentum. Players must juggle offensive capabilities—firing forward machine guns and dropping downward-facing bombs to clear ground threats—with defensive positioning. Tilting the helicopter too steeply results in a fiery crash, and stray bullets easily decimate the very hostages you are dispatched to save. Strategic fuel management and calculated risk-taking dictate the pace, as hovering too long in a hot zone invites certain destruction from coordinated enemy crossfire.
