Description

Tempo Jr. is a platforming game and sequel to Tempo on the Sega 32X. The player again takes control of the cute grasshopper Tempo and guides him through various stages. The goal in each level is just to find the exit. Each level consists of two stages and a boss fight. After finishing a level, Tempo can take part in a mini game if he found coins in the completed level and win additional points or lives. Tempo can shoot notes from his hands to stun enemies, which will then automatically be kicked away on contact. He can also use his wings to move faster, float in the air or fall more slowly and more controlled.

Tempo Jr.

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1995 exclusively for the Sega Game Gear, Tempo Jr. serves as a portable spin-off of the 32X platforming cult classic. The storyline follows Major Minor and his trusty sidekick Tempo as they embark on a musical quest across vibrant, rhythm-infused stages to rescue their kidnapped friends from the clutches of the wicked rhythm-stealing villain, King Dirge. While scaled down for Sega's 8-bit handheld, the title retains the colorful, upbeat aesthetic of its console predecessor. The game's development leaned heavily into cheerful, melodic level design and quirky bug-themed adversaries, making it a unique and charming addition to the Game Gear's late-stage library.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Tempo Jr. plays as a traditional side-scrolling platformer with a rhythmic twist. Players control Tempo through a series of energetic, multi-layered stages, collecting musical notes to boost scores and power up abilities. Unlike standard platforming heroes, Tempo relies on dance moves, stylish kicks, and musical projectiles to dispatch eccentric enemies like walking boomboxes and aggressive beetles. Exploration is heavily rewarded; finding hidden areas opens up bonus rounds where players can earn extra lives and power-ups by timing button presses to the catchy chiptune soundtrack. The level design cleverly incorporates moving platforms, vertical climbs, and bouncy terrain that forces players to master the game's distinct momentum and jump arcs.
