Description

A prince and princess were in love with each other until a jealous demon turned the happy couple into a set of stone paddles; resembling that of the pinball kind.Suddenly, a ball came into existence that could use the prince and princess in order to defeat the demons that now rule over the kingdom. Players have to use two paddles; the upper one is used to defeat demons while the lower one helps to prevent the player from dropping to its demise at the bottom of the board. By defeating bad guys and smashing through breakable blocks, the player advances towards the boss of each level.
Resembling a harder version of Arkanoid, the vertically scrolling screen forces the ball to move constantly forward in an attempt to reach the boss.
Only the Sega Mega Drive version has a two-player option. Players can choose between three difficulty levels in the Game Gear version and can also select an option to do a time trial.

Devilish

Overview & History

Released by Sage's Creation and published by Tonkin House in 1991 for the Sega Game Gear, *Devilish* (subtitled *The Next Gate* in Japan) is a darkly unique amalgamation of block-breaking arcade action and side-scrolling platforming. Borrowing the foundational mechanics of Taito's *Arkanoid*, the game infuses dark fantasy lore into its paddle-and-ball formula. Players follow the tragic tale of Prince Rick and Princess Anna, whose kingdom has been overrun by a demonic horde led by the Prince of Darkness. Transformed into a magical pair of stone slabs (a paddle and a floating shield-sphere), the royal couple must battle through underworld realms to defeat the dark forces and restore their human forms.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional brick-breakers confined to a single static screen, *Devilish* forces the player-controlled paddle to constantly navigate horizontal and vertical scrolling stages while keeping a captive energy sphere (representing Princess Anna) in play. You must smash through grotesque organic barriers, defeat wandering monsters, and collect power-ups that modify the ball's speed, elemental properties, and trajectory. The screen constantly pushes forward, adding intense platformer-style timing elements where missing a bounce or getting trapped behind environment geometry costs precious lives. Boss battles at the end of each world require you to direct the energy sphere directly into vulnerable monster weak points while dodging screen-filling projectiles.
