Sega’s 8-bit systems received a unique adaptation of Disney’s 1992 animated film Aladdin.

Like other versions, this is a side-scrolling action game. The player controls Aladdin, making his way through a variety of locations, including the streets of Agrabah, the Cave of Wonders, the Sultan’s palace and more. Gameplay takes several different forms: some levels are chases, where Aladdin runs automatically, but must be made to jump over chasms or rolling rocks and barrels, evade falling objects and avoid getting caught by a guard. Other levels are platforming affairs: Aladdin must run, jump and climb, find keys or switches to open doors while searching for the exit. Rocks can be collected and be thrown to dispatch enemies or hit buttons otherwise out of reach. Finally, there are also several magic carpet rides in the game, in which the level scrolls automatically and the player must make sure to avoid any obstacles in the way.

Released by Sega in 1994 for the portable Game Gear system, Disney's Aladdin successfully adapted the beloved animated film's narrative into a handheld platforming format. Following the street-rat-turned-prince through the bustling markets of Agrabah and the hazardous depths of the Cave of Wonders, the game tasked players with thwarting the evil Grand Vizier Jafar. Although it shared thematic roots with its 16-bit Genesis counterpart, this Game Gear adaptation was developed as an entirely distinct title, offering unique level designs, adjusted physics, and bespoke sprite work tailored specifically to the portable console's backlit color screen.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike the Genesis version which armed Aladdin with a scimitar, this Game Gear iteration relies primarily on acrobatic platforming, dodging hazards, and collecting red gems to trade for extra lives. Aladdin can jump over obstacles, duck under sweeping blades, and defeat various guards and desert wildlife by landing jumps directly on top of them. The game spans multiple iconic locations, featuring frantic vertical climbing sequences, carpet-riding escape runs, and environmental puzzles. Players must manage a health meter represented by hearts while navigating treacherous platform layouts that demand precise timing, particularly during boss encounters against Jafar's henchmen and the sorcerer himself.
