Description

Zan Gear is a handheld spinoff of the Zan series. It depicts a war between Tokugawa Sekigahara (blue) and Ishida (red). The aim of the game is for the player to control the blue army and defeat the red army. Controlling army requires careful strategy by recruiting adequate soldiers and choosing where to start a battle. Capturing key fortifications will boost the blue army’s control over the land. Members of the green army are neutral and can be recruited by either side.

Zan Gear

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1990 by Sanritsu Denki, Zan Gear is a fascinating, lesser-known entry in the Sega Game Gear's early library. Loosely tied to the broader Zan strategy franchise that spanned multiple 16-bit systems, this portable iteration shifts focus from grand tactical warfare to an intimate, action-platforming perspective. Set in a war-torn futuristic feudal Japan where rival warlords battle for supremacy using cybernetic armor and ancient martial arts, players assume the role of an elite warrior tasked with infiltrating enemy strongholds. Despite the Game Gear's notoriously blurry LCD screen at the time, developers utilized high-contrast sprites and moody, industrial backgrounds to make the subterranean fortresses and neon-lit castles stand out. While it never received a Western localization, Zan Gear remains a cult-classic curiosity for retro collectors hunting for hidden gems that bridge the gap between historical drama and sci-fi mecha aesthetics.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Zan Gear plays out across a series of grueling side-scrolling action stages culminating in intense, pattern-based boss fights against rival samurai and towering war machines. Unlike standard beat-'em-ups of the era, the game emphasizes precision platforming and rapid-fire swordplay. The protagonist is armed with a standard-issue plasma katana for close-quarters combat, but can also collect scattered power-ups that temporarily upgrade their blade into a ranged energy whip or grant a protective force field. A unique mechanic is the 'Energy Gauge,' which depletes not just from taking damage, but also from executing the character's signature screen-clearing special move: a summoning technique that calls down a cybernetic dragon to clear out swarms of drone infantry. Players must carefully balance aggressive offense with tactical retreats, as bottomless pits and moving hazard platforms demand absolute mastery of the momentum-based jumping physics.
