Cool Spot

Overview & History

Released by Virgin Games in 1993, Cool Spot for the Sega Game Gear successfully transported the iconic 7 Up mascot from television commercials into an engaging platforming adventure. While the original Genesis and SNES versions enjoyed wider acclaim, the Game Gear adaptation managed to capture the vibrant aesthetic, snappy controls, and jazzy soundtrack of Tommy Tallarico's design. The game has no traditional narrative; instead, your sole objective is to navigate various whimsical environments—ranging from a sun-drenched beach to a cozy attic—to rescue fellow trapped Spots. Despite the hardware limitations of Sega's handheld, the developers crafted a remarkably colorful title that stands out as a unique relic of 90s corporate mascot-driven gaming.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard platformers where you defeat enemies to progress, Cool Spot tasks players with exploring multi-directional, zoomable stages to collect a set quota of red 7 Up spots before the timer runs out. Spot is equipped with a signature fizzy projectile attack, allowing him to shoot bubbles to dispatch mischievous enemies like crabs, bumblebees, and sentient toys. Collecting spots not only fills your quota but also heals Spot and extends his maximum health bar. Hidden throughout each stage are "C-O-O-L" letters that grant access to a bonus stage where you can earn continues. The game demands precise platforming, utilizing hanging spots, springboards, and sliding mechanics to traverse intricate, vertical level designs packed with secrets.
