A full range of punches and jabs are available, with full round-by-round scoring from the judges. You can choose from 3-12 rounds, and there are 2 camera views as well as an automatic switch option.

You can play simple exhibition matches or tournaments, or launch into a career mode. In this you start at the bottom of the world rankings, and must reach the top by beating the game’s players, who other than George are all fictitious boxers with varying strengths and weaknesses. The coach gives advice before each fight to help highlight weaknesses in your play. There are passwords for each round.

Released in 1995 by Sterling Silver Software and published by Malibu Games for the Sega Game Gear, Foreman for Real brought the gritty world of professional boxing to the 8-bit handheld arena. Endorsed by the legendary heavyweight champion George Foreman, this title aimed to deliver a realistic pugilistic simulation despite the hardware limitations of Sega's portable console. Unlike its 16-bit console counterparts, the Game Gear version carved out its own niche by compressing the sweat, strategy, and stamina management of the heavyweight division into a smaller screen, offering a surprisingly tactical sports experience that tested players' reflexes and resource management.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Foreman for Real departs from arcade-style button-mashing by introducing a heavy focus on stamina and positioning. Players select their boxer and step into the squared circle to face a roster of aggressive AI opponents across a multi-tier career mode. Success relies entirely on reading your opponent's guard, managing your fatigue meter, and countering at precisely the right moment. If you throw too many wild haymakers, your boxer will tire out, leaving them vulnerable to a devastating knockout. The character moveset includes jabs, hooks, and uppercuts, all modified by whether you are holding down defensive buttons to cover your head or body. Dodging and weaving are essential, as taking too many uncontested hits depletes your health and increases the likelihood of hitting the canvas. Between rounds, players must manage their stamina recovery, adding a layer of strategic depth rare for 8-bit sports titles.
