Description

The Looney Tunes platformer Daffy Duck in Hollywood received a unique version for Sega’s 8-bit systems. While similar in story, concept and themes to the Mega Drive version, the 8-bit version has unique level designs and also several differences in gameplay.

Players control Daffy Duck, who is hired to reacquire Yosemite Sam’s Golden Cartoon Movie Awards, stolen by the nefarious Doctor Duck Brain. Daffy has to make his way through six different worlds of three levels each. Each world is based on a movie genre including western, horror, adventure, sci-fi and more. At the beginning of the game, the six levels of the first two worlds can be selected in any order. Completing all six unlocks the levels of the next two worlds.

Daffy Duck in Hollywood

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1994 for the handheld Game Gear (and later ported to the Master System), Daffy Duck in Hollywood is a bizarre, fast-paced platformer based loosely on Chuck Jones’ classic theatrical cartoon Robin Hood Daffy. The plot thrusts the greedy, arrogant mallard into the role of a harassed studio extra trapped on a chaotic movie backlot. Daffy must navigate through various cinematic eras and genres—ranging from prehistoric jungle sets to medieval castles and sci-fi spaceship interiors—all while trying to escape the director's tyrannical wrath. Armed with a versatile spray can that shoots different types of projectile paint, Daffy's quest is an eccentric, animated romp through the golden age of cinema, packed with colorful sprites, frantic scrolling, and plenty of slapstick humor true to the Looney Tunes legacy.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game plays as a challenging 2D side-scrolling platformer where Daffy's primary offensive tool is his magical spray paint can. Players can collect different color nozzles that alter the spray's properties—such as freezing enemies in blocks of ice, burning them, or dissolving obstacles in the environment. Unlike standard platformers where jumping on foes defeats them, Daffy must use his spray to neutralize quirky studio hazards, ranging from mechanical flying saucers to aggressive cavemen and angry medieval knights. Exploration is heavily encouraged; hidden areas contain golden stars, health-restoring items, and extra lives necessary to survive the punishing difficulty curve. The level design cleverly mimics film sets, complete with directors' chairs, ropes, and moving studio backdrops that test the player's reflexes and puzzle-solving timing.
