The Simpsons: Bartman Meets Radioactive Man

Overview & History

Released in 1992 by Acclaim Entertainment and developed by Imagineering, The Simpsons: Bartman Meets Radioactive Man brought America's favorite animated dysfunctional family to the Sega Game Gear. Serving as a sequel to the NES title, this side-scrolling platformer swaps out Springfield's familiar streets for a surreal, comic-book-inspired dimension. The storyline kicks off when Bart Simpson discovers that his beloved comic book idol, Radioactive Man, along with sidekick Fallout Boy, has been trapped inside a malevolent video game dimension by the nefarious Dr. Crab. Donning his purple-and-orange superhero cape, Bart transforms into Bartman and dives headfirst into the digital comic pages to rescue his heroes across bizarre, hazard-laden levels ranging from strange industrial landscapes to floating cloud domains.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard platformers of the era, this Game Gear adaptation relies heavily on vertical exploration and projectile-based combat. Bartman is not entirely defenseless; he can toss his signature cherry bombs to dispatch zany enemies like flying mutant insects and robotic henchmen. The game is notorious for its punishing difficulty, requiring precise platforming and careful management of Bart's health meter. Along the way, players must collect radioactive icons to boost their score and energy. The game's sprite work captures the animated aesthetic remarkably well within the limitations of the portable's hardware, though the smaller screen resolution occasionally limits the player's reaction time against incoming hazards and sudden enemy spawns.
