Description

Chicago Syndicate is a spin-off of the Eternal Champions universe, now in the form of an horizontal beat ’em up. In this game you will take the role of Larcen Tyler, the character known in the original game for working as a gangster in the Chicago of the 1920s, but who after the attempt on his life by his boss, will now be in the opposite side, that of an anti-Mafia crusader.

Corruption and violence have taken hold of Chicago, six powerful gangster bosses control the streets. In your hands will be to turn Chicago into a peaceful place again. For this, you count with a varied selection of weapons and 60 different moves. The action takes place in several zones with different gang activity, and you can enter or leave any of them anytime, depending in your preferences.

Released by SEGA in 1995 exclusively for the Master System and Game Gear in PAL and Brazilian territories, *Chicago Syndicate* places players in the trench coat of a gritty mob enforcer. Set in the ruthless underworld of 1930s Prohibition-era Chicago, the storyline tasks you with infiltrating rival gang operations, rescuing kidnapped syndicate associates, and reclaiming stolen territory. Developed late in the 8-bit handheld's lifecycle, the game pushed the Game Gear's hardware with atmospheric, urban-noir sprites, moody color palettes, and cinematic cutscenes between missions that set a grim crime-thriller tone uncommon for portable titles of the era.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrolling beat-'em-ups, *Chicago Syndicate* combines action-platforming with light RPG management elements. Players navigate multi-tiered environments ranging from gritty alleyways and abandoned warehouses to smoky speakeasies. As you progress, you must manage resources, collect cash bribes, and interrogate informants to uncover passwords and access hidden stash houses. Character moveset options include rapid-fire punches, high-flying drop kicks, and ranged projectile attacks using period-authentic firearms once collected. You must constantly monitor your health and ammunition meters while avoiding environmental hazards like rolling barrels and rival mobsters wielding Tommy guns.
