Cutthroat Island

Overview & History

Released by LJN in 1995 for the Sega Game Gear, Cutthroat Island is an ambitious 8-bit movie tie-in side-scroller developed alongside the notoriously ill-fated blockbuster film starring Geena Davis and Matthew Modine. Unlike the more common Ocean Software versions on other platforms, the Game Gear iteration attempts to capture the sweeping scale of Caribbean swashbuckling on portable hardware. The storyline casts players as the fierce pirate Morgan Adams, racing against her treacherous uncle, Dawg Brown, to assemble the three pieces of a golden treasure map and unlock the riches of Clam Island. Despite the film's box office failure, this handheld adaptation carved out a niche for itself by offering surprisingly brisk platforming action, atmospheric tropical sprite graphics, and a surprisingly faithful attempt at translating shipboard naval combat and jungle exploration into the constraints of Sega's handheld.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay alternates between traditional side-scrolling platform stages and tense swashbuckling encounters. As Morgan Adams, players must navigate treacherous terrain filled with venomous snakes, rival buccaneers, and spiked pitfalls. Unlike many basic 8-bit brawlers, Morgan features a diverse arsenal: she wields a swift cutlass for close-quarters melee combat, a flintlock pistol for ranged crowd control, and a grappling hook that allows her to swing across chasms and reach elevated ledges. Combat relies on timing your strikes against aggressive AI opponents who block and counterattack. Levels range from the decaying interiors of damp dungeons and bustling tavern interiors to precarious ship decks swaying in stormy seas. Players must also manage a limited health pool, collecting food and rum scattered across the stages to survive the relentless onslaught of Dawg's cutthroats.
