Description

Like Ristar on Genesis, Ristar on Game Gear is a sidescrolling platformer about Sega’s short lived stellar mascot, fighting his way through six planets to defeat the evil tyrant Greedy.

This 8-bit release of Ristar has the same plot, similar themes, and plays much like its more famous Genesis counterpart, but has a different set of levels, making it a separate game. Half of the planets are re-arrangements of the Genesis ones, and the other half are unique to this iteration. Some of Ristar’s moves and various enemy mechanics have been tweaked or expanded. Also unique to Ristar on Game Gear are collectable mini-stars scattered throughout the levels, which award an extra life on collecting 100.

Ristar

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1995 during the twilight of the 8-bit era, Ristar for the Sega Game Gear serves as a remarkably ambitious counterpart to its Genesis sibling. Developed by Team Shinobi, this portable platformer drops players into a vibrant, celestial universe where the tyrannical space pirate Greedy has enslaved the planetary leaders of the Valdi system. The narrative follows Ristar, a shooting-star humanoid hero summoned by the planetary queen's prayer, on a quest across six distinct, colorful worlds to restore peace. Despite hardware limitations compared to the 16-bit original, this Game Gear adaptation retains stunning pixel art, atmospheric music by Naofumi Hataya and Tomoko Sasaki, and a surprisingly deep adventure that pushes Sega's handheld to its absolute limits.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard platformers where characters jump on enemies or wield weapons, Ristar’s entire gameplay revolves around his unique prehensile elastic arms. Instead of traditional limbs, Ristar uses his star-shaped hands to grab enemies, pull himself toward them for a devastating headbutt, or latch onto environmental poles to vault across sprawling chasms. Players can also climb vertical walls, swing pendulum-style, and catch flying projectiles to hurl them back at foes. Exploration yields hidden bonus stages and energy-refilling star items across diverse themes like mechanized factories, aquatic grottos, and floating botanical gardens. Combat requires tactical grabbing and timing rather than frantic button-mashing, creating a rhythmic, acrobatic flow that defines the game's distinct identity.
