Garfield: Caught in the Act

Overview & History

Released in 1995 by Sega, Garfield: Caught in the Act for the Sega Game Gear is a unique side-scrolling platformer based on Jim Davis's iconic, lasagna-loving feline. Unlike its 16-bit Genesis counterpart, the Game Gear iteration was entirely rebuilt by Aspect to fit the portable system's hardware limitations, resulting in a distinct visual and structural experience. The narrative kicks off when Garfield and his canine companion Odie accidentally destroy television repairman Nermal's TV set while playing baseball. Infuriated, Nermal banishes Garfield inside the television set. To escape, the lazy orange cat must traverse through several classic television genres—spanning from prehistoric times and pirate seas to ancient Egyptian tombs and horror movie parodies—battling mutated versions of his own TV shows and cinematic tropes. While it retains the biting sarcasm and comic-strip charm of the source material, the game is infamous for its demanding difficulty and unforgiving platforming.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Garfield navigates five primary TV-themed worlds, each broken down into multiple stages filled with hazard-heavy environments and quirky enemies like cavemen mice, mummies, and ghosts. Unlike many platformers where jumping on enemies is the primary attack, Garfield relies on a projectile system. He can throw various objects found in the environment, such as rocks, bones, or pies, depending on the current world setting. He also features a punch attack for close-range combat. Health is represented by a slice-of-pizza meter; collecting more lasagna and slices restores lost vitality. Scattered throughout the levels are hidden tokens and special puzzle pieces. While visually scaled down from the Genesis version to accommodate the Game Gear's smaller screen resolution, the game retains vibrant sprite work, catchy chiptune renditions of TV-style themes, and distinct animations that capture Garfield’s signature lazy arrogance and flailing panic.
