Released in 1994 by U.S. Gold for the Sega Game Gear, *Hurricanes* is a platforming adaptation of the DIC Productions animated series. The storyline follows the titular superhero team—led by leader and environmental crusader Hurricane—as they travel the globe to thwart the evil mastermind Dr. Claw-esque villain, Apocryphites, and his industrial pollution cronies who are draining the Earth's natural resources. Developed during a time when cartoon-to-handheld ports were ubiquitous, the Game Gear version stands out for its vibrant 8-bit color palette and surprisingly fluid sprite scaling, capturing the Saturday-morning cartoon aesthetic while translating the animated environmental themes into a side-scrolling action title.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players traverse five distinct, multi-stage environmental zones ranging from toxic factories to dense rainforests. The core mechanic revolves around utilizing environmental hazards against enemies, alongside standard run-and-gun platforming. The titular hero, Hurricane, can jump, duck, and unleash a specialized vortex attack to stun or eliminate foes. Throughout the stages, players must rescue trapped animals and collect green-energy crystals to boost their score and health reserves. Unlike many linear platformers of the era, *Hurricanes* incorporates verticality and backtracking, requiring players to locate specific switches and keys hidden within labyrinthine industrial complexes to unlock sector exits before facing challenging end-of-level bosses.
