Released in 1994 by Acclaim Entertainment for the Sega Game Gear, The Itchy & Scratchy Game thrusts players into the ultraviolent, slapstick animated world of The Simpsons' favorite cartoon-within-a-cartoon. Developed by Bits Studios, the portable 8-bit adaptation tasks players with controlling Itchy the homicidal mouse as he relentlessly pursues and tortures Scratchy the hapless cat across a series of historically and culturally themed time-period levels, ranging from the Stone Age to a futuristic metropolis. Capitalizing on the immense popularity of the TV show, the Game Gear version strove to capture the frantic pacing and macabre cartoon physics of the original shorts despite the handheld console's hardware limitations, offering a distinct visual style and scaled-down color palette compared to its 16-bit console counterparts.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

As Itchy, the player must navigate side-scrolling stages packed with platforming hazards, environmental traps, and Scratchy's defensive retaliations. Itchy wields a rotating arsenal of excessively lethal weaponry collected throughout each stage, including mallets, chainsaws, dynamite, and proton guns. The core gameplay loop revolves around cornering Scratchy, inflicting massive comedic damage to deplete his health bar, and ultimately forcing him into a hilariously gruesome demise to clear the level. Unlike traditional platformers where navigation is the sole goal, here the objective is pure cartoon carnage. Players must carefully manage Itchy's health, dodge counter-attacks from Scratchy and secondary enemies, and utilize platforming agility to traverse treacherous terrain filled with lava, buzzsaws, and laser grids before time runs out.
