Junction

Overview & History

Released in 1990 by Athena for the Sega Game Gear, Junction is a dizzying, isometric puzzle game that pushed handheld logic challenges into a new dimension. While many early Game Gear titles attempted traditional platforming, Junction carved its own niche by challenging players to guide a rolling marble across intricate, floating track networks suspended in a digital void. Developed during an era when portable puzzle games were exploding in popularity, this title offered a unique mechanical twist on classic navigation games by combining reflex-based timing with spatial rotation.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core objective in Junction is to safely transport a continuously rolling marble from the start point to the goal within a strict time limit. The catch is that the marble moves automatically, and the player does not control the sphere directly. Instead, players rotate the entire interconnected grid of tracks in 90-degree increments to alter the path and guide the marble forward. Levels become increasingly labyrinthine, featuring dead ends, directional arrows that restrict movement, traps, and missing bridge segments that require precise timing to cross. Success demands intense spatial awareness, as you must anticipate the marble's momentum while spinning multi-tiered pathways in real-time to prevent the sphere from plunging into the abyss.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Rotate track grid left/right or up/down
  • Action Keys: Accelerate marble / confirm menu selections
  • Enter: Start / Pause
