Description

KLAX – the latest, greatest hit in the arcades – is now available for play on the GameGear! This brainteaser of a game is simple in concept: Catch colored tiles that come down the conveyor belt. Rack up points by arranging them in same-colored stacks or rows. A tic-tac-tile test, if you will. Sounds easy? It is… until the tiles come tumbling at you so fast, you’ll go nuts trying to catch them all – while figuring out where best to stack them before you run out of room! But no matter how tough KLAX gets, the hardest part is pulling yourself away from this fun, fast, and totally mind-boggling game!

Klax

Overview & History

Released by Tengen in 1990 and subsequently ported to the Sega Game Gear in 1991, Klax is a hypnotic, tile-matching puzzle masterpiece whose iconic tagline famously declared, "It is the 90s and there is time for Klax." As the spiritual successor to arcade block-droppers, this portable adaptation retained the distinct, neon-hued aesthetic and isometric perspective of the original arcade cabinet. Players assume the role of an intergalactic tile-sorter working on the planet Klax, catching and organizing colorful, plastic-like blocks sliding down a conveyor belt. The Game Gear version managed to capture the frantic, pulse-pounding rhythm of the arcade release, squeezing the addictive puzzle-action into a handheld format that defined early 90s portable gaming.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core objective of Klax revolves around catching colored tiles as they cascade down a five-lane conveyor belt into a paddle controlled by the player. Once caught, the tiles can be stacked into the paddle's holding slots—up to a maximum of five—and tossed back onto the grid. The goal is to arrange three or more matching colored tiles horizontally, vertically, or diagonally to trigger a "Klax" and clear them from the board. As you progress through the escalating waves, victory conditions change dynamically, requiring players to clear specific quantities of horizontal lines, alternating colors, or survive designated wave time limits. Failing to catch a tile or overflowing the paddle costs precious lives, while dropping tiles into the abyss forces quick strategic improvisation. Special tiles, such as the flashing rainbow wildcards and drop-clearing bombs, add layers of frantic risk-reward strategy.
