Description

This is an official NFL-licensed football game for the Game Gear. It has several features that were pretty new for that time: An announcer comments on the events on the field, the viewpoint changes as you play the game, multiplayer action, and the roster includes 1500 players that were taken from the up-to-date 1994 NFL team roster with all 28 teams. You’re not only in control of the quarterback – you can also be the receiver.

NFL '95

Overview & History

Released by Sega in late 1994 exclusively for the Sega Game Gear, NFL '95 arrived during a fiercely competitive era of portable sports titles. Building upon the technical foundations of its predecessor, this iteration sought to pack the full 28-team roster from the 1994 NFL season, complete with authentic player numbers and updated franchise color palettes, into a pocket-sized handheld cartridge. While lacking a traditional narrative storyline, the game captured the drama of the 1994-1995 NFL campaign, allowing players to rewrite playoff brackets and battle their way to the ultimate pixelated championship, all constrained by the technical limitations and notorious motion blur of the Game Gear's backlit LCD screen.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

NFL '95 delivers traditional 11-on-11 football action viewed from a vertical, scrolling perspective that tracks the ball down the gridiron. Players can choose from exhibition matches, full season play, or sudden-death playoff brackets. Before each snap, you select from a robust playbook featuring standard running, short passing, and deep-threat plays. On offense, mechanics rely heavily on timing: passing requires you to cycle through highlighted receivers icons before the pocket collapses, while running backs can execute sharp jukes to evade defenders. On defense, you must anticipate the opponent's play-calling, manually selecting a defensive formation and taking control of the nearest linebacker or safety to execute diving tackles or jump to swat down flying spiral passes. The game cleverly utilizes the Game Gear's two-button layout by assigning context-sensitive actions depending on whether your team is in possession of the ball or pursuing the ball carrier.
