NHL All-Star Hockey

Overview & History

Released in 1995 by Sega for the handheld Game Gear, NHL All-Star Hockey arrived late in the 16-bit era when developers were squeezing every ounce of power out of portable hardware. Developed to capture the booming popularity of the 1994-95 NHL season, this title ditched the sluggish engine of earlier handheld hockey iterations for a fast-paced, pseudo-3D perspective. While it didn't feature a narrative storyline—relying instead on authentic season, playoff, and exhibition modes—it notably included the official NHLPA license, allowing players to skate as real-world superstars like Mario Lemieux and Eric Lindros on a backlit screen.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game distinguishes itself through a unique vertical-scrolling perspective that simulates the length of a hockey rink much better than traditional horizontal setups. Players control a team of five skaters plus a goalie, utilizing a distinct momentum engine that rewards precise passing and sharp turns. Unlike typical arcade brawlers, positioning is vital; you must manage fatigue, execute crisp one-timers, and rely on dekes to bypass aggressive defenders. The goalie AI is surprisingly robust for 1995 hardware, reacting dynamically to wristers, slap shots, and wrap-arounds. Though physical body-checking can lead to penalty box trips, executing a clean open-ice check remains one of the game's most satisfying defensive maneuvers.
