Description

Pac-Man makes a rare appearance outside of a maze environment in Pac-Attack, a fun and quirky puzzle game. This unique entry in the genre puts its own twist on established conventions and adds one of gaming’s most iconic characters to the mix. The goal is simple: Keep your screen clear of falling blocks and ghosts by lining up blocks horizontally, causing them to disappear.

Pac-Attack

Overview & History

Released by Namco in 1993, Pac-Attack successfully bridges the gap between classic arcade iconography and falling-block puzzle design, serving as the system's clever answer to Tetris. Built upon the foundation of the Japanese game Cosmo Gang the Video: Puzzle, this Game Gear adaptation swaps out alien creatures for ghosts, witches, and the ravenous yellow hero himself. The story revolves around Pac-Man’s ongoing crusade to rid the realm of the troublesome Witch of the Netherworld and her endless spectral minions. Optimized for the Game Gear's portable screen, the game features vibrant color palettes for its era, highly distinctive character sprites, and a surprisingly bouncy chiptune soundtrack that loops endlessly while players frantically clear lines.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loop centers on clearing vertically stacking blocks while managing an inventory of autonomous Pac-Man characters and floating ghosts. As tetromino-like blocks tumble downward from the top of the screen, players must rotate and position them to clear horizontal rows. Periodically, ghosts descend into the well alongside standard blocks. The twist arrives when a special "Pac-Man" block drops; upon landing, he immediately begins marching horizontally across the screen, eating every single ghost in his path until he hits a wall or runs out of ghouls. If Pac-Man consumes a blinking Fairy block, he transforms into Super Pac-Man, allowing him to chomp through solid obstacles. However, leaving ghosts unattended allows them to multiply, ultimately stacking to the top and triggering a game over.
