PGA Tour 96

Overview & History

Released by Electronic Arts in 1996, *PGA Tour 96* for the Sega Game Gear successfully shrunk the sprawling prestige of professional golf onto a portable, 8-bit cartridge. While the 16-bit and 32-bit iterations grabbed headlines on the Genesis, SNES, and PlayStation, this handheld adaptation carved out its own niche by faithfully porting EA’s iconic sports franchise to Sega’s backlit portable. Developed during the twilight years of the Game Gear's commercial dominance, the game challenged programmers to distill complex ballistics, varied terrain, and sweeping course layouts into a palette limited by hardware constraints. It featured real-world professional golfers of the era, letting players step into the shoes of touring pros to conquer legendary, licensed courses like TPC at Sawgrass and River Highlands, all from the palm of their hand.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike the twitch-reflex demands of platformers, *PGA Tour 96* relies on calculated, tactical execution. The gameplay revolves around EA’s pioneering three-click swing meter, which demands precise timing to determine power and accuracy. Players must navigate treacherous course conditions, carefully factoring in wind speed, elevation changes, and lie angles—whether the ball rests in deep rough, a steep sand bunker, or neatly on the fairway. Before every stroke, you can cycle through a full bag of clubs, adjust your stance, and inspect an overhead hole map to plan your approach. The Game Gear version cleverly utilizes scrolling screens to simulate the vastness of each hole, offering a surprisingly robust simulation mode complete with tournament play, practice rounds, and stroke play options.

Keyboard Controls
