Description

Scratch Golf is an overhead golfing sim that the player can play on two different golf courses either against three computer opponents in a game of scratch golf or practice on any course by themselves. Two-players can also play via link up against each other in head-to-head or team up and go up against a computer duo.

Like many other golf games the player uses a power and accuracy bar that is brought up after pressing a certain button and pressing it again to confirm the position.

Scratch Golf

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1992 by Vic Tokai, Scratch Golf is an eccentric sports title for the Sega Game Gear that completely subverts traditional golf simulations. Rather than offering a serene day on the green with realistic physics, the game drops players into bizarre, arcade-style obstacle courses. The storyline humorously follows an aspiring golfer named Pip who must conquer surrealistic, hazardous terrains ranging from volcanic caverns to futuristic neon cities to claim the ultimate championship trophy. Restricted by the Game Gear's hardware limitations yet utilizing its vibrant color palette, Vic Tokai managed to craft an unusually creative spin on the 8-bit sports genre that remains a cult classic among retro collectors.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard golf games where you select clubs based on wind and distance, Scratch Golf plays more like a top-down action puzzle game. Players navigate Pip across labyrinthine stages filled with moving platforms, bottomless pits, hyperactive wildlife, and bouncy bumpers. Instead of swinging a standard club, you adjust your shot's angle and power gauge, sending the ball ricocheting off environmental obstacles to reach the hole. Character moves include special "power chips" that clear barriers and curved slice shots to navigate tight corners. Managing the strict time limit and avoiding hazards that instantly drain Pip's health adds intense urgency, turning a leisurely sport into a frantic test of reflexes and spatial geometry.
