Side Pocket

Overview & History

Released by Data East in 1994, Side Pocket for the Sega Game Gear successfully translates the smoky, underground aesthetic of American 9-ball pool into a portable 8-bit format. Unlike Data East's own arcade original, this handheld iteration was custom-built to harness the hardware's limited color palette, delivering a surprisingly atmospheric puzzle-billiards experience on the go. Stripping away complex narrative tropes, the "storyline" simply casts you as an ambitious hustler climbing the ranks through various stylish urban pocket-billiards clubs, striving for a high score and ultimate pocket dominance.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard simulation pool games, Side Pocket on the Game Gear functions almost as an angle-calculation puzzle game. Players must sink numbered balls in numerical order (1 through 9, depending on the mode) while navigating trick-shot challenges, pockets that randomly blink for bonus multipliers, and strict time limits. Accuracy is paramount: you adjust your cue angle, select your strike power using a moving meter, and apply vital English (spin) to the cue ball by positioning a reticle on the ball's surface. Successfully clearing tables unlocks increasingly difficult pocket layouts and bonus stages where precise bank shots are mandatory to earn extra lives.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Aim cue, adjust spin reticle, and navigate menus
  • Action Keys: Press Button 1 to lock in power and strike the cue ball; Button 2 to toggle aiming precision
  • Enter: Start / Pause the match and view current score statistics
