Super Columns

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1995 exclusively for the Sega Game Gear as a portable follow-up to their iconic puzzle franchise, Super Columns breathed new life into the traditional falling-block genre. Building on the ancient Phoenician jewel-stacking theme of the original arcade and Mega Drive hits, this handheld iteration introduced frantic competitive modes, a surprisingly deep narrative puzzle mode, and power-ups directly inspired by Greek and Roman mythology. Players must strategically match magical jewels in horizontal, vertical, or diagonal lines of three or more to clear them from the narrow vertical well before the stack reaches the top. The game stands out in the Game Gear library for its surprisingly crisp sprite work, vibrant color palette despite the hardware's limitations, and an unforgettable, atmospheric chiptune soundtrack that elevates the puzzle-solving tension.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard falling-block titles, Super Columns revolves around three-jewel pillars where players can actively cycle the order of the top, middle, and bottom gems while they descend. The core mechanic is enriched by special magic stones: bomb blocks that clear surrounding areas, flashing wild jewels, and skull blocks that penalize the player if left unmanaged. The Story Mode takes players on an epic mythological journey across the ancient Mediterranean, featuring whimsical boss encounters where defeating opponents requires out-surviving them in rapid-fire garbage-gem onslaughts. Meanwhile, the Flash Columns mode challenges players to clear specifically marked pulsing jewels scattered throughout pre-set configurations, adding a tactical puzzle-box layer to the fast-paced arcade action.
