Description

Super Golf is an overhead golf game with one complete course of 18 holes. The controls follow the traditional two-click system: the power of the hit and the swerve are determined after pressing a button twice with the correct timing. The used club and the basic direction is set before the hit. Together with the used golfer’s talents (putting, power, accuracy and luck) this is used to calculate the result of the hit. There are always four athletes competing; either human or AI controlled.

Super Golf

Overview & History

Released by Sigma in 1990 exclusively for the Sega Game Gear, Super Golf brought the refined pacing of traditional stroke play into the burgeoning portable console market. Capitalizing on the Game Gear’s then-impressive backlit color screen, this title departed from the simplistic top-down golf games of earlier handhelds by offering vibrant, distinct hole layouts, changing weather conditions, and distinct character statistics. While it never achieved the global mainstream fame of Nintendo's golfing franchises, it carved out a dedicated niche among retro portable enthusiasts for its surprisingly deep physics engine and challenging course topography.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard arcade sports titles, Super Golf places heavy emphasis on course management and club selection. Players navigate a multi-hole tournament, battling undulating greens, hidden sand bunkers, water hazards, and gusting wind that dynamically alters ball trajectory mid-flight. Before every stroke, golfers must analyze the topographical map and elevation changes. The swing mechanic utilizes a classic three-tap power meter: the first press initiates the backswing, the second determines shot power, and the third dictates accuracy. Misjudging the final tap on the meter results in a frustrating slice or hook into the rough, making precise timing essential for par survival.
