Chase H.Q.

Overview & History

Released by Taito in 1991 for Sega's portable Game Gear, *Chase H.Q.* successfully compressed the thrilling arcade coin-op experience into a pocket-sized handheld. Developed to rival Taito's own classic vehicular combat titles, the Game Gear port tasked players with taking on the persona of tough-as-nails undercover cop Tony Gibson, partnered with explosive expert Raymond Diaz. Operating out of the Special Investigation Unit, your mission is to hunt down and violently neutralize notorious international felons before they can escape city limits. Despite the hardware limitations of 8-bit handheld gaming, Taito implemented clever visual scaling tricks to simulate a fast-paced, pseudo-3D perspective down the treacherous highway asphalt.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard racers, *Chase H.Q.* is an aggressive vehicular combat game divided into distinct stages. Each level begins with a radio dispatch from Nancy, feeding you vital intelligence about your fleeing target, followed by a frantic race against the clock to catch up with the criminal's heavily modified sports car. Players navigate winding roads while dodging civilian traffic, treacherous roadworks, and aggressive barricades set up by criminal associates. Once you finally pull alongside the target vehicle, the mechanics shift into a punishing endurance test. You must repeatedly ram the fleeing fugitive's car—utilizing a limited supply of high-impact Turbo boosts—to drain their health bar before the timer hits zero. The action culminates in a cinematic crash sequence once the criminal's car is totaled. The Game Gear version stands out with its surprisingly crisp chiptune soundtrack and faithful recreation of the arcade's adrenaline-fueled highway showdowns.
