Description

Surf Ninjas was created as a tie-on for the 1993 New Line Cinema movie of the same name and is loosely based on its content. The entire introduction of how the surfers discover they are the sons of a Patusani king is not mentioned and instead the player is thrown in the story as a ninja trainee right away. Colonel Chi wants to overthrow the kingdom and kill the last heirs, so he sends troops of ninjas to kill the two brothers.

Players control one of the brothers as he travels through different locations such as the Palace restaurant, the docks at Venice (California), the island of Patu San and more. The 2D side-scrolling platforms missions contains platforms, enemies and ninjas and various hazards. One button is used to jump while the other, in combination with the D-pad, launches punches, kicks, throws and various combos. Attacks can also be performed from the air or using very high jumps.

During gameplay an options screen can be accessed to review the statistics (health, strength, reflex and fight), get a hint through Adam’s Game Gear, call the ninja Zatch to launch a powerful attack or select a weapon such as shurikens, fireballs, a knife and a sword. By defeating enemies coins are collected to be spent on bonus time on the clock, Zatch power-ups, a bonus life, complete regeneration, a hint, a weapon or a continue.

Surf Ninjas

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1993 for the handheld Game Gear, Surf Ninjas is an isometric beat-'em-up that serves as a direct tie-in to the cult-classic teen action-comedy film starring Ernie Reyes Jr. and Rob Schneider. Developed during the peak of the early-'90s ninja craze, the game transports players to the tropical island of Patusan, where teenage surfer brothers Louis and Johnny discover their royal heritage and must overthrow the villainous Colonel Chi. Unlike typical console ports that simply slapped movie stills onto a generic engine, the Game Gear version captured the bizarre, surf-rock aesthetic of the film, complete with digitized voice clips, tropical level designs, and an upbeat chiptune soundtrack that leaned heavily into the California beach-bum vibe mixed with martial arts action.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game plays out across a series of horizontally scrolling and multi-directional isometric stages where players must bash through waves of Colonel Chi's heavily armed mercenaries. You can choose to play as either Johnny or Louis, each bringing distinct martial arts flair to the beachside brawls. Combat relies heavily on a combination of flying side-kicks, sweeping roundhouses, and brutal melee combos. Scattered throughout the environments are signature weapons like throwing stars and wooden bō staffs that give you extended reach against aggressive enemies. Between standard beat-'em-up stages, the game deviates into surprisingly frantic top-down jet-ski racing minigames that break up the pacing. Health pickups appear in the form of tropical fruits, and players must manage their limited lives while navigating environmental hazards such as collapsing rope bridges, explosive barrels, and treacherous surf obstacles. The difficulty curve is notoriously unforgiving, requiring precise timing for jumps and attacks to survive the relentless hordes of Patusan guards.
