Description
Nazo Puyo (Secret Puyo) takes the “Quest mode” found in many Puyo Puyo games and breaks it off into a game of its own. Whereas the usual Puyo Puyo gameplay is centred around beating an opponent by having a more skillful play technique, the puzzle mode (and all Nazo Puyo) games is a leisurely puzzle game where you have to fulfill a set goal on a screen already filled with a certain arrangement of Puyos.
These goals may be to simply eliminate all Puyos on-screen, to eliminate all Puyos of a certain colour, or to eliminate a certain number of Puyos at once. You may also be asked to do a “rensa”, or chain reaction, in a certain number of steps. A “rensa” is arranged by making so that if one set of four or more Puyos is eliminated, it will make neighbouring Puyos fall so that new combinations arise, and are eliminated. The fulfillment of the goals may be complicated by the fact that you are given only Puyos of a certain colour to work with.
The game has also an edit mode, where you can make your own puzzles given all the options described above.
It was released exclusively in bundles with specially marked Game Gears in Japan
Nazo Puyo
Overview & History
Released by Compile in 1993 for the Sega Game Gear, Nazo Puyo (Puzzle Puyo) shifted the franchise's trajectory from traditional head-to-head block-dropping battles into a dedicated puzzle-solving adventure. Rather than racing an opponent to fill your side of the screen, this spin-off challenges the player to clear a meticulously pre-arranged grid of colorful, gelatinous Puyo creatures using a strictly limited supply of pieces. The narrative follows series mascot Arle Nadja and her companion Carbuncle as they navigate a whimsical, monster-filled dungeon crawl, interacting with a colorful cast of classic Compile antagonists through witty, text-heavy dialogue vignettes between brain-teasing stages.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
At its core, Nazo Puyo transforms the physics of falling blocks into tactical chess. Each of the game's dozens of stages presents a unique, static board setup populated with scattered, isolated Puyos. Players are given a specific sequence of paired Puyos to drop from the top of the screen. The ultimate objective is usually to trigger a cascading chain reaction that wipes out every single Puyo on the board, often within a single meticulously calculated drop. Unlike the main series, there is no garbage generation mechanic or time-attack pressure; instead, success relies entirely on spatial reasoning, predicting gravity-fed drops, and utilizing color-matching chains. Special rules occasionally introduce blocking boulders, indestructible obstacles, and special transformation triggers that add layers of complexity to the late-game levels.
