Description

Nazo Puyo 2 continues where the original left off. It contains 200 new puzzles to solve, compared to the 100 of the predecessor. Each puzzle is played Puyo Puyo-style, but with a certain goal to complete using a preset set of puyos, e.g. “destroy all puyos”, “eliminate 9 puyos at once”, “make a triple combo” and so on, thereby taxing players’ Puyo Puyo skills and strategies.

Another new addition is a battery backup, allowing players not only to save their current position, but also to save all puzzles that may have been created in the edit mode.

Nazo Puyo 2

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1993 for Sega's handheld Game Gear, Nazo Puyo 2 (なぞぷよ2) is a fascinating spin-off from Compile's iconic falling-block puzzle franchise. While mainline Puyo Puyo games focused on high-speed competitive multiplayer matches, this entry leans heavily into single-player puzzle-solving (the "Nazo" or "Mystery/Puzzle" variant). Serving as a direct sequel to the Game Gear adaptation of the original puzzle trials, this cartridge presents players with pre-set board states where the objective is to clear all the puyos in a strictly limited number of moves, often requiring chain reactions. It blends the vibrant anime aesthetic and beloved cast—featuring the recurring protagonist Arle Nadja and her persistent rival Schezo Wegey—with cerebral, tactical brain-teasers rather than arcade endurance.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Rather than dropping random pairs of puyos from the top of the screen to build cascading chains organically, Nazo Puyo 2 tasks you with surgically dismantling meticulously crafted puyo configurations. Each stage acts as a discrete riddle. Players are given a specific set of puyos to place, and success hinges on understanding the gravity mechanics, color-matching rules, and precise positioning to trigger maximum-length pop cascades. The game features an engaging overworld adventure mode where Arle navigates a comical fantasy realm, engaging in dialogue-heavy encounters that culminate in these puzzle duels. As you progress, obstacles such as immovable blocks and hard-to-reach color placements increase the difficulty. The controls map smoothly to the handheld layout: the D-Pad maneuvers the falling or sliding pieces left and right, the action buttons rotate the puyo pairs clockwise and counter-clockwise, and soft-dropping accelerates their descent to ensure precise timing during complex chain setups.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move piece left/right, soft drop
  • Action Keys: Rotate puyo pieces
  • Enter: Start / Pause
