Description

Based on the anime of the same name, the game has the young ninja Fūsuke and his trusty penguin fighting the evil Empire and reuniting the Ninku corps to ultimately defeat the turncoat Kisumi. Much of the game makes use of static cutscenes and dialogue. Combat takes the form of action fighting, requiring the player to beat opponents one after the other. As the game progresses, the player will have additional characters to join Fūsuke’s party, some of which can be selected to fight in Fūsuke’s place, having their own unique moves.

Ninku

Overview & History

Released by Takara in 1995 exclusively in Japan for the Sega Game Gear, Ninku is an action-platformer based on Koji Kiriyama's popular manga and anime series of the same name. Set in a war-torn world where martial artists fuse animal spirits with ninjutsu, the game follows Fuusuke, the hyperactive leader of the Ninku clan, as he searches for his dispersed comrades. Capitalizing on the franchise's peak popularity, the Game Gear adaptation translates the vibrant, anime-styled universe into a side-scrolling adventure, utilizing the handheld's color palette to recreate the distinctive character designs and eccentric fantasy-martial-arts environments.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players control Fuusuke through a series of increasingly challenging platforming stages populated by enemies from the evil Empire. Unlike standard action games of the era, Ninku heavily integrates Fuusuke's signature Wind-elemental (Fuu) ninja techniques into the core traversal and combat. Fuusuke can execute a high-flying pole-vault attack using his weapon, cling to walls, and unleash devastating wind-blast specials that clear the screen of adversaries. Platforming requires precise timing, as players must negotiate moving platforms, bottomless pits, and hazard-laden terrain. Boss battles demand pattern recognition, forcing players to exploit weaknesses in rival Ninku masters using a combination of melee combos and projectile chi attacks.
