Description

Ride your trusty bike – loaded with tightly rolled newspapers – through a comical, ever-changing neighborhood. Score big points by tossing papers into subscribers’ mailboxes and porches. Don’t miss, ’cause you’ll lose a customer for every bad throw. Now, for the real fun: score even bigger points by bombarding nonsubscribers’ homes, taking out their windows, lamps and statues! But watch out for bad drivers, skateboarders, remote control cars and lots of other obstacles. They can ruin your day real fast. After work, take on the Training Course, a BMX-style bonus round that’ll test your aim and riding skills to the max!

Paperboy

Overview & History

Released by Tengen in 1990 for the Sega Game Gear, this portable adaptation of Atari's iconic arcade classic tasks players with delivering the daily newspaper along a suburban street populated by eccentric hazards. Unlike its arcade and NES predecessors, the Game Gear version adjusts the visual perspective and aspect ratio to fit the handheld’s backlit LCD screen, bringing the grueling seven-day suburban route directly on the go. You assume the role of an unnamed, over-achieving paperboy navigating Monday through Sunday. Your ultimate goal is simple yet punishing: maintain all subscribers by successfully tossing papers onto their porches while avoiding the chaotic dangers of Suburbia, culminating in a treacherous final obstacle course.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game plays from an isometric, scrolling viewpoint where your bicycle constantly moves forward. The core mechanic revolves around balancing speed—using pedal acceleration to speed up or brake—while throwing rolled-up newspapers to the left and right. Subscribers are your lifeline; missing too many houses leads to a game over by Sunday night, marked by the grim headline of getting fired. The environment is aggressively hostile, populated by runaway skateboards, stray dogs, breakdancing youths, RC cars, and unpredictable construction workers. You earn extra points and subscribers by vandalizing non-subscriber property—such as smashing windows with papers—adding a delightfully chaotic edge to your morning route.
