Overview & History

Originally a coin-op arcade heavy-hitter by Taito in 1987, Rastan Saga was ported to the Sega Game Gear in 1991, courtesy of SIMS. Infused with a gritty sword-and-sorcery atmosphere inspired by Conan the Barbarian, the game casts players as the titular barbarian mercenary hired to slay a dragon terrorizing the kingdom of Cepter. While cramped by the Game Gear's smaller resolution compared to the arcade original, this handheld port retains the dark fantasy aesthetic, gritty sprite design, and driving chiptune soundtrack. Players traverse treacherous multi-tiered stages featuring crumbling platforms, toxic swamps, and monolithic ancient ruins, battling mythological beasts like harpies, chimeras, and lizardmen across six distinct zones.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard linear platformers, Rastan Saga emphasizes heavy melee combat and momentum. Armed initially with a standard broadsword, Rastan can collect temporary weapon upgrades—such as a long-reaching mace, a sweeping axe, and a deadly fire sword—as well as defensive relics like shields, capes, and rings that reduce incoming damage or boost score multipliers. Movement requires precision; jumping and attacking simultaneously are crucial for clearing gaps while swatting away flying pests. Environmental hazards, vertical climbing ropes, and bottomless pits demand careful timing. Defeating specific red enemies drops power-up icons, adding a layer of tactical resource management as players decide whether to risk a dangerous leap for a crucial health-restoring potion or a stronger offensive weapon.
