Released exclusively in Japan in 1991 for the Sega Game Gear by Sanritsu Denki, Shikinjoh (also known as Shikinjo) is an obscure, highly atmospheric vertical-scrolling action game steeped in feudal Japanese folklore. Developed during the 8-bit handheld's infancy, the title task players with guiding a mystical warrior through cursed, demon-infested realms inspired by Buddhist mythology and traditional ghost stories. While it never received a Western localization—largely due to its niche thematic elements and late-generation regional strategies—it remains a fascinating cult classic for collectors hunting down unique hardware-pushing titles that experimented with sprite-scaling and moody, monochromatic-friendly color palettes on the backlit screen.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game unfolds across frantic, vertically scrolling stages where players must continuously ascend while battling relentless waves of yokai, floating spirit orbs, and towering boss demons. The protagonist is armed with a spiritual projectile attack that can be charged for more devastating area-of-effect damage, alongside a close-range melee warding strike for enemies that breach personal space. Unique to Shikinjoh is the "Karma" meter, which fills up as you vanquish spirits; reaching specific thresholds allows the player to temporarily transform into a powerful celestial beast with invulnerability frames and screen-clearing holy fire capabilities. Navigating the vertical layout requires precise platforming, as crumbling pagodas, moving cloud platforms, and sudden gusts of wind threaten to plunge the warrior back down into the abyss. Power-ups scattered throughout urns and defeated enemies grant extended health, multi-directional shot spreads, and temporary ghostly shields.
