Jungle Strike: The Sequel to Desert Strike

Overview & History

Released in 1993 by Electronic Arts, Jungle Strike: The Sequel to Desert Strike for the Sega Game Gear successfully ported the isometric military combat of its 16-bit predecessor to handheld hardware. Set a few years after the Gulf War, the plot follows protagonist Nick Lobo and a resourceful co-pilot as they thwart a vengeful alliance between drug cartel kingpin Kilbana and nuclear terrorist Ibn Kilbana. Despite the severe technical constraints of the Game Gear's smaller screen and limited color palette, developer Unexpected Development managed to retain the dense jungles, fortified enemy compounds, and explosive arcade action that defined the series.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard horizontal scrollers, Jungle Strike utilizes a distinct pseudo-3D isometric perspective. Players primarily pilot the advanced Comanche helicopter, navigating through multi-tiered mission maps while carefully managing a limited supply of fuel, armor, and ammunition. The game demands strategic target prioritization: you must neutralize anti-air gun nests, radar towers, and enemy armor before rescuing prisoners of war or securing stolen nuclear warheads. Missions frequently require players to land on helipads to replenish resources or pick up specialized cargo. While the Game Gear version simplifies some of the sprawling campaigns found on home consoles, it maintains its reputation for punishing difficulty, requiring precise flight maneuvers to dodge incoming surface-to-air missiles while strafing ground targets with your machine gun and Hydra rockets.
