Columns

Overview & History

Originally conceptualized by Jay Geertsen in 1989 and expertly ported to Sega's handheld powerhouse in 1990 by Chior, *Columns* for the Game Gear is a mesmerizing puzzle classic steeped in ancient Phoenician lore. Unlike its contemporaries that leaned into a space-age or plumber-themed aesthetic, *Columns* drops players into an archaeological fantasy realm. The game's narrative frames the cascading blocks as ancient jewels embedded in the mythical treasures of Atlantis, tasking the player with organizing these glistening, vertically descending triplets of gems to prevent a chaotic backlog in the sacred chamber.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike *Tetris*, where pieces connect and morph into solid shapes, *Columns* relies strictly on color-matching mechanics. Descending pillars consist of three distinct jewels stacked vertically. Players must rapidly shift the jewel order using the action buttons and guide the column horizontally into designated grid slots. The objective is to align three or more identical jewels horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Upon a successful match, the jewels vanish with a satisfying chime, causing gravity to take hold of any gems floating above—frequently triggering cascading chain reactions that award massive bonus scores. As the score increases, the speed of the falling pillars accelerates, testing the player's peripheral vision and spatial awareness. The Game Gear version also features unique modes like "Flash Columns," where players must clear a specific blinking magic jewel buried at the bottom of the stack to advance through progressively difficult, handcrafted stages.
