Description

Shinobi. It’s Japanese for stealth, the perfect description of a Master Ninja. And that’s exactly what you are! Armed with throwing stars and finely-honed battle skills, you must defeat the Ring of Five. Fight your way past mercenaries and karate thugs. Take out the meanest martial artists and rescue hostages. But these dangers pale in comparison to your ultimate challenge: A fight to the death against five evil Ninja Assassins whose mastery of the deadly ancient arts may well surpass your own!

Shinobi

Overview & History

Released by SEGA in 1991 for the portable Game Gear, this iteration of *Shinobi* was built from the ground up rather than being a direct port of the arcade original. The game places players back in the role of Joe Musashi, the legendary master ninja tasked with rescuing the captive members of his Oboro clan from the clutches of the Neo-Zeed criminal syndicate. Featuring distinctive hardware-adapted visuals, vibrant color palettes tailored to the handheld's backlit screen, and an atmospheric chiptune soundtrack composed by Yuzo Koshiro, this title remains a standout portable ninja platformer of the early 1990s.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay blends traditional side-scrolling action with puzzle-platforming elements across diverse stages, ranging from industrial factories to moving elevators and cavernous hideouts. Unlike standard sequels, this Game Gear version introduces a unique character-switching mechanic: as you rescue imprisoned ninja comrades, you gain the ability to swap between four distinct warriors on the fly. Each ninja possesses a specialized superpower: Joe Musashi wields his signature shuriken and sword; Blue Ninja uses a grappling hook to scale vertical terrain; Pink Ninja executes a devastating high jump to reach obscured ledges; and Green Ninja summons elemental fire attacks that clear out dense clusters of on-screen enemies. Navigating these hazards requires precise timing, managing a limited health bar, and strategically deploying powerful Ninjutsu magic spells—such as invulnerability or screen-clearing lightning—to survive intense boss encounters.
