Description

Enter a time when men were warriors and Gods ruled the world. A time of good against evil, a place of danger. Summoned by Zeus to rescue Athena, you will infiltrate the Underworld with the power to transform into mythical creatures with supernatural strength.

Level 1: Become a savage werewolf and use teeth and nails to shred your enemies to pieces. Capture three of the elusive Spirit Balls and you’ll be transformed into a ferocius, fireball throwing Werewolf.

Level 2 and 3: Take flight as a Weredragon and use fiery force to fry the followers of Neff. Creep across slippery crevasses inside a deep cavern as the crafty Werebear.

Level 4 and 5: Stalk the gates of the Underworld fortress as a maneating Weretiger, a predator with no pity. Inside the inner-sanctum call on Golden Werewolf’s might to demolish Neff, the demon – forever.

Altered Beast

Overview & History

Developed and published by Sega, *Altered Beast* roared into arcades in 1988 before receiving its legendary, highly anticipated Sega Genesis port in 1988 in Japan and 1989 in North America. Serving as the quintessential pack-in title that initially showcased the graphical and auditory prowess of the 16-bit console, this dark fantasy beat-'em-up immerses players in an eerie underworld. The storyline tasks a resurrected Greek centurion with a grim divine mission: Zeus has called upon the hero to rescue his kidnapped daughter, Athena, from the clutches of the underworld lord, Neff. To accomplish this, the warrior must traverse five treacherous, graveyard-and-monsters-themed stages, absorbing mystical life essences to transform into terrifying mythological beasts capable of obliterating demonic hordes.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Playing as the unnamed centurion, you battle through side-scrolling stages plagued by zombies, two-headed-ogres, and flying demons. The core gameplay loop revolves around collecting "Spirit Balls" dropped by specific gleaming white twin-headed wolves. Collecting one ball buffs the hero's physique into a muscular brawler; a second ball grants a projectile attack; and a third triggers a full-scale, cinematic transformation sequence. Depending on the level, you morph into a Werewolf, a lightning-wielding Were-dragon, a fire-spewing Were-bear, a razor-clawed Were-tiger, or the ultimate golden Were-dragon. Each beast boasts unique offensive capabilities—such as the dragon's electrified flight dash or the bear's petrifying breath—which are mandatory for defeating stage bosses like the grotesque, shifting monstrosity Neff himself.
