Team up with spell casting mages, wire-headed deckers, or mythic orcs and trolls of the distant past. Take on a variety of shadowruns including: Cleaning up the streets, jacking into the Matrix for a big time cyber-heist or pulling off a risky “Corporate Extraction.” Stalk the cities in real-time combat and glide through the virtual battlefield of the Matrix, where an encounter with Black ICE may be your last!

Shadowrun

Overview & History

Released by BlueSky Software and published by Sega in 1994, Shadowrun for the Sega Genesis is a distinct cyberpunk action-RPG adaptation of the tabletop classic, completely separate from its SNES counterpart. Set in a dystopian Seattle in the year 2058, players step into the trench coat of Joshua, a man who wakes up in a morgue with severe amnesia after his brother Michael is brutally murdered. To uncover the conspiracy behind his brother's death, Joshua must navigate the neon-lit underworld, dodging corporate extraction teams, rival syndicates, and rogue deckers. Blending classic tabletop lore with isometric action, this Genesis adaptation offers a grittier, fast-paced dive into the convergence of magic and machine.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike the point-and-click investigative style of the SNES version, the Genesis Shadowrun leans heavily into real-time, top-down action mixed with traditional RPG progression. Players explore expansive urban environments, enter seedy bars to pick up illegal "shadowruns," and hack into corporate mainframes using the Matrix. Combat is immediate and unforgiving; Joshua can wield a vast arsenal ranging from street-level pistols and heavy assault rifles to potent magical spells. Karmic points earned by completing missions allow players to upgrade attributes like strength, computer literacy, and magical aptitude. The economy is central to survival—every bullet, deck upgrade, and hired mercenary costs valuable nuyen, making resource management as vital as trigger discipline during high-stakes corporate extractions.
