Description

Putty Squad is an unreleased Sega Mega Drive game ported from Amiga version by Dynamic Interactive Computer Entertainment and set to be published by Ocean Software in May 1995. Putty Squad is a sequel to Putty, released for the Amiga and SNES in 1992 and 1993, respectively.

Putty Squad was extremely close to completion before being cancelled, with the Mega Drive version being reviewed by several magazines of the day (and priced at £44.95 in the UK). In the end, only the SNES version of the game was released – planned Amiga (of which the Mega Drive version was apparently based on) and DOS ports were also cancelled late in development.

A working prototype of the Mega Drive version was found and dumped in October 2015.

Putty Squad

Overview & History

Developed by System 3 and originally released for the Amiga in 1994, *Putty Squad* eventually found its way to the Sega Genesis in a port handled by Ocean Software. Serving as the sequel to the quirky platformer *Sputty*, the game puts players in control of a malleable, blue hero named Putty. The narrative kicks off in a bizarre military laboratory where a mad scientist has captured Putty's comrades. Armed with only his morphing abilities, Putty must navigate through a series of increasingly hazardous, surreal levels to rescue his imprisoned squadmates and defeat the sinister forces holding them captive. While the Genesis port faced a tumultuous development cycle and long delays, it ultimately delivered a distinctly charming British platforming experience characterized by vibrant, chunky sprite work, catchy chiptune tracks, and a notoriously demanding difficulty curve that tested even seasoned retro gamers.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard platformers of the 16-bit era, *Putty Squad* relies heavily on the protagonist's unique physical properties. Putty is not merely a jumping character; he can stretch his gelatinous body vertically and horizontally, flatten himself to dodge projectiles, absorb items, and inflate into a floating balloon to cross vast chasms. Combat involves throwing "punch" attacks or absorbing various objects and enemies to spit them back out as lethal projectiles. A core mechanic of the game involves rescuing fellow putties scattered across labyrinthine stages, which then follow the player in a conga-line formation and can be deployed as extra firepower or sacrificed for puzzle-solving. Levels are sprawling, non-linear maps filled with devious traps, conveyor belts, and enemies that require precise timing and clever use of Putty's morphing repertoire to survive.
