Zombie High

Overview & History

Developed as an ambitious, unreleased psychological horror beat-em-up originally slated for the Sega Genesis in 1994, Zombie High was shelved during its final QA phase due to licensing disputes and the impending 32-bit console era. Recently unearthed ROM prototypes have allowed retro enthusiasts to finally experience its eccentric premise: players control Chad, a varsity quarterback trapped inside Blackwood Academy during a midnight occult ritual gone terribly wrong. The headmaster’s forbidden textbook has resurrected the entire 1957 senior class, turning cheerleaders, hall monitors, and biology teachers into flesh-eating ghouls.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Zombie High combines traditional side-scrolling brawler mechanics with light survival-horror resource management. Unlike standard Genesis beat-em-ups, players must manage a "Sanity Meter" alongside health; lingering too long in unlit locker rooms causes Chad to hallucinate, draining his life bar. Combat relies on improvised weaponry scavenged from the school environment—chemistry lab beakers, broken floorboards, and heavy textbooks. Chad's baseline moveset includes a standard high-school tackle, a sweeping locker-door melee combo, and a desperate dodge-roll that provides brief invulnerability frames against swarming undead hordes. Boss encounters feature possessed faculty members, climaxing in an epic cafeteria showdown against the monstrous, multi-phase Principal Malignant.
