Description
Lion King 3 is a platform game released for the Sega Mega Drive based, not the Disney film of the same name, but the original film itself, as a follow-up to The Lion King II. It was developed by an unknown company likely connected to Chuanpu & Gamtec and published by X Boy. A second release does not credit X Boy but it is unknown if it was published by another company or by X Boy without their logo.
In this game, players get the choice of playing as either Simba or Mufasa, although they play identically to one another, through several levels, each with a boss at the end, all while having to contend with various platforming hazards such as floating platforms, swings and all sorts of enemies that obstruct their path. Both lions possess the ability to attack with their claws using the B button and can fire a special attack, a energy wave that shoots straight forward, with the A button. Extra special attacks can be found throughout every level.
There is no story in-game and the ending screen is simply a shot of the player’s lion gazing out across a lake as the word “FIN” appears overhead.
Lion King 3
Overview & History
Released deep into the 16-bit era's twilight, *Lion King 3* for the Sega Genesis is a fascinating bootleg anomaly that captured the imaginations of retro collectors. While Disney never officially authored a canonical third installment for Genesis, enterprising unlicensed developers crafted this unofficial sequel to bridge narrative gaps. Drawing heavily from the sprawling chronology of *The Lion King II: Simba's Pride*, the game drops players into a surprisingly atmospheric, albeit pixel-gritty, rendition of the Outlands. The game's history is steeped in the underground pirate cartridge markets of Asia and South America, where programmers reverse-engineered Genesis architecture to repurpose sprite assets and build bespoke scrolling engine routines. Though it lacks the official polish of Westwood Studios' original masterpiece, this unauthorized cartridge offers a distinct, obscure slice of 16-bit history.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
Unlike its predecessor's frustratingly punishing difficulty, *Lion King 3* adopts a more forgiving yet erratic platforming rhythm. Players navigate side-scrolling stages plagued by treacherous gaps, hostile animal foes, and shifting environmental hazards. The combat mechanics feature a revised swipe attack and a momentum-based pounce that lets players clear wider chasms by timing jumps off enemy heads. Scattered across the gnarled roots and dusty canyons are collectible insects that restore health, alongside hidden paw icons granting extra lives. The level design cleverly incorporates day-night cycles rendered through striking, albeit moody, color palettes. Boss encounters demand pattern memorization, pitting the feline protagonist against rival rogues in tightly confined arenas where precise positioning dictates survival.
