Description

Undead Line is a top-down arcade shooter with scrolling screens, like Commando and other games. The player controls a character that shoots projectiles at enemy monsters.

The six levels available are presented in a menu and can be selected and played in any order. There is a boss battle at the end of each one.

Chests with power-ups are scattered throughout the levels. They open when shot, and in the Genesis version it is possible to cycle through the available power-ups by keeping firing at them. The power-ups include armor and speed boosts, and several types of projectiles.

Undead Line

Overview & History

Released by T&E Soft in 1991, Undead Line for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis is a dark, punishingly difficult hybrid of a top-down and side-scrolling action-RPG and run-and-gun shooter. Unlike its earlier MSX2 counterpart, the Genesis version was completely overhauled with grim, grotesque gothic pixel art and an atmospheric heavy metal soundtrack composed by Katsuro Tajima. The storyline plunges players into a bleak medieval fantasy world overrun by necromancy, where a lone hero must traverse cursed crypts, eerie forests, and decaying castles to rescue his kidnapped sister and seal away an ancient demonic evil before the blood moon reaches its zenith.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Undead Line breaks away from standard linear shooters by incorporating light role-playing elements. Before embarking on their perilous quest, players can select their starting loadout and character class, each boasting distinct magical affinities, movement speeds, and attack ranges. As you vanquish swarms of ghouls, skeletal knights, and flying horrors, enemies drop experience crystals and souls. Collecting these allows you to level up your offensive spells, upgrade your armor, and acquire devastating screen-clearing screen bombs. The game demands precise positioning and memorization, constantly shifting perspectives between vertical scrolling climbs and horizontal gauntlets while hurling relentless bullet-hell projectiles at the player.
