Description

Mega Q*bert is a new homebrew title for Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. The game features two different game modes – Mega, which is an all-new set of 80 different levels to beat, and Arcade, a recreation of the arcade original (based on the NES iteration) – and simultaneous cooperative gameplay, where two players share one view of the stage and set of lives. To make synchronization easier, each player has an option to instantly mount the other player’s head, allowing them to do careful maneuvers when necessary.

Mega Q*bert

Overview & History

Originally slated for a 1994 release by GT Interactive for the Sega Genesis, Mega Q*bert is a fascinating, unreleased 16-bit reinvention of Gottlieb's 1982 arcade classic. Bypassing straightforward emulation, this title reimagined the isometric hop-and-color formula with a distinct cartoon aesthetic, featuring a more expressive Q*bert equipped with a baseball cap and sneakers. Although cancelled during the final stages of production due to the shifting console generation toward 32-bit hardware, prototype ROMs eventually surfaced, allowing retro enthusiasts to experience this lost Genesis oddity.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike the looping single-screen puzzles of the original, Mega Q*bert introduces a sprawling, side-scrolling level progression complete with quirky boss fights, dynamic environments, and themed worlds ranging from prehistoric jungles to futuristic laboratories. Players must still navigate a pyramid of isometric cubes, hopping diagonally to change every tile to a target color. However, the game ramps up the challenge by introducing new hazard types, slippery ice tiles, conveyor belts, and eccentric enemies like Ugg, Slick, and Coily the snake. Q*bert can collect power-ups to freeze enemies, gain temporary invincibility, or clear entire rows of blocks instantly.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move diagonally across the isometric pyramid
  • Action Keys: Activate power-ups or jump across gaps
  • Enter: Start / Pause
